4 Days in Hyderabad – Day 3: Hussain Sagar, Durgam Cheruvu & A Relaxed Day in Modern Hyderabad

Yesterday belonged to the Old City.

We walked through the bustling lanes around Charminar, admired royal palaces, wandered through centuries-old markets and probably ate more biryani than we had planned. By the time we returned to the hotel, our feet had already informed us that they deserved a holiday.

Hussain Sagar and Secretariat Building

So today, let’s listen to them.

Forget the alarm clock.Wake up a little late.

There are no forts to climb today. No crowded bazaars waiting to test your patience. Today is about slowing down and discovering another face of Hyderabad.

After all, every city deserves to be enjoyed at different speeds.

A Leisurely Brunch

Instead of an early breakfast, let’s begin the day with a hearty brunch.

Ask your cab driver to take you to Subbiah Gari Hotel.

Yesterday, Hyderabad introduced us to the rich flavours of Mughlai cuisine. Today, it welcomes us with the comforting taste of Andhra hospitality.

The moment you sit down, a banana leaf is placed in front of you. Before you can even ask what is on the menu, bowls of dal, vegetables, chutneys, pickles, curries, papad and sweets begin arriving one after another.

I stopped counting after a while. Some meals are remembered because of a single signature dish.

This one is remembered because every small serving has its own personality.

Take your time. Nobody should rush an Andhra meal.

Thali at Subbiah Gari Buddha Bhojanam

By the time you finish, you will understand why Hyderabad is not just the city of biryani.

For more detail on this thali, please check my post on Andhra Thali.

Hussain Sagar

Our first destination is Hussain Sagar.

As your cab approaches the lake, Hyderabad quietly changes its personality once again.

The narrow streets of the Old City disappear. Busy markets give way to broad roads, open spaces and a refreshing breeze coming across the water.

Built during the reign of Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah in the sixteenth century, Hussain Sagar was originally created as a reservoir. Today, it has become one of the city’s favourite places to relax.

Don’t miss the reflection on the pagoda of Lumbini Park.

Walk along the promenade without looking at your watch.

Watch families enjoying their afternoon together. Children chase pigeons while photographers wait patiently for the perfect reflection of the giant Buddha statue standing peacefully in the middle of the lake.

If the weather is pleasant, take the boat ride.

Watching Hyderabad from the middle of Hussain Sagar is a beautiful experience. On one side stands the historic city that we explored yesterday. On the other, modern Hyderabad stretches towards the horizon with its glass towers and busy skyline.

It almost feels as if two different cities have decided to live together.

Find a quiet bench before leaving.

Sit there for a few minutes.

Travel is not always about covering more places. Sometimes it is about allowing a place to become a memory.

Patthar Ka Gosht

By this time, if you feel a bit hungry, have some street food or head up to Bademiyan Kebab.

Bademiyan Kababs

Order a plate of Patthar Ka Gosht – their signature dish. Do watch how the kabab is Barbequed on a granite plate. To me these litle things complete my travel.

A Little Shopping Never Hurts

No visit to Hyderabad feels complete without taking home its most famous treasure—pearls.

Before heading towards the evening destination, stop at Pujari Jewellers.

Hyderabad has been known as the City of Pearls for centuries, and whether you are looking for an elegant necklace, delicate earrings or a simple string of cultured pearls, this is a wonderful place to explore.

Even if shopping isn’t on your list, spend a little time looking around.

The craftsmanship itself is worth appreciating.

Who knows? You may end up carrying a small piece of Hyderabad back home.

If you are not interested in Pearls but local crafts, get an auto rickshaw and visit Shilparamam.

Durgam Cheruvu

As the afternoon slowly begins to fade, let’s drive towards Durgam Cheruvu.

If Hussain Sagar represents Hyderabad’s heritage, Durgam Cheruvu represents its modern heartbeat.

Hidden among ancient granite rocks for centuries, this lake remained almost untouched until Hyderabad expanded around it. Today, it is one of the city’s favourite evening escapes.

Walk across the elegant cable bridge.

The breeze is cooler here. Kayaks gently glide across the water while the surrounding skyline slowly changes colour with the setting sun.

Durgam Cheruvu

I had planned to spend only half an hour here. Nearly two hours passed before I realised it.

Some places have that effect on you. They quietly ask you to stay a little longer. And you happily agree.

Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills

As daylight slowly disappears, our final destination for today is Jubilee Hills or Banjara Hills.

Yesterday’s Hyderabad smelled of biryani, Irani chai and old stone buildings.

Today’s Hyderabad smells of freshly brewed coffee, artisan bakeries and grilled kebabs.

Wide roads lined with trees replace the crowded lanes of the Old City. Boutique cafés, designer stores and elegant restaurants welcome you with a completely different atmosphere.

Choose a café that catches your attention.

Order your favourite coffee.

Or perhaps reward yourself with a slice of cheesecake or a rich chocolate dessert.

One of my favourite travel memories isn’t from a famous monument.

It is from sitting beside a café window in Jubilee Hills, watching the evening traffic roll by while the city lights slowly came alive.

Sometimes, doing absolutely nothing becomes the best part of travelling.

As the evening lights begin reflecting on the roads of Jubilee Hills, you may suddenly realise that the day has slipped by without any hurry. There were no forts to conquer, no long queues outside monuments and no checklist waiting to be completed. Today was simply about enjoying Hyderabad at its own pace.

Before returning to your hotel, there is one final stop left.

Head to Paradise for dinner

Yes, I know. Yesterday we enjoyed the legendary biryani of the Old City. Today is different.

Paradise is not just a restaurant; it is one of Hyderabad’s culinary landmarks. Since 1953, it has welcomed travellers from across the world, serving its famous Hyderabadi Dum Biryani alongside succulent kebabs and traditional desserts. Whether you choose chicken or mutton, end your meal with Qubani ka Meetha or Double ka Meetha. They are the perfect sweet finale after a satisfying dinner.

A Gentle End to the Day

As you return to your hotel, you may realise that Hyderabad has been quietly telling you three different stories.

The first was about kings, forts and diamonds.

The second was about bustling markets, royal palaces and unforgettable food.

Today was about lakes, peaceful evenings and a modern city that knows how to slow down.

Tomorrow, our journey reaches its final chapter.

We leave the real world behind and step into Ramoji Film City, where grand palaces, airports, railway stations and colourful streets are all part of one giant movie set.

Trust me.

It is the perfect ending to four unforgettable days in Hyderabad.
